can you take a fairly high dose of codeine with the anti biotic amoxicillin. is it safe? im asking you, not my doctor, so i'd expect the answer not to be, " ask your doctor" or related to that.

robert b replied: "There are no restrictions on food, beverages, or activity during treatment with amoxicillin unless otherwise directed by your doctor What drug(s) may interact with amoxicillin? allopurinol birth control pills methotrexate neomycin probenecid"

Deep Thinker replied: "I don't see why not. The combo most people get for a bad tooth is amoxyllin and Tylenol 3 which contains codeine. Go for it...ask your doctor.....lol.....just kidding."

Bren replied: "yes its fine to take a high dose of codeine or indeed any other painkillers with amoxicillin"

I just took 1000mg of Amoxicillin (2 pills). Isn't this an unually high dose?!? I am wondering if this is a dangerous amount to take. The scrip said 2 now, then 1 (1000mg) 3x/day. I am a 125 pound female. I am feeling kinda wierd...does it make you feel wierd normally?

Middleman replied: "It's klind of high, but not unheard of. Lots of people start with a mega dose, to sort of really get things going. The weird feeling is probably self-induced. But take it easy. There is no psychotropic affecrt of this med."

Wise Guy! replied: "No. It was prescribed that way for a reason. Do as instructed and don't question it. If you continued to take it that way it would be too much but that is precisely why they wrote it out like they did."

YaYa replied: "check the printout from the pharmacy, contact pharmacist or doc."

How soon after starting a high dose antibiotic can I get a yeast infection? My doctor gave me 875mg amoxicillin that I have to take twice a day for strep throat. I just started taking the antibiotic yesterday and now I have some discomfort. Is it possible to get a yeast infection only one day after starting antibiotics?

peanut replied: "3-4 days. Eat yogurt."

Chantarella replied: "Yes. Forget the "eat yoghurt" advice- its an old wives tale. Get the proper suppositories and treat the yeast infection."

Ana replied: "Yes,it's possible."

Why can't I stop amoxicillin after one dose? I know the usual answer, it's just that amoxicillin does not actually kill bacteria, just helps slow it's reproduction while your immune system takes over. So how can resistance build in this case? I guess I am looking for a more involved answer, which , of course, I could not get from my doctor. Background: I was prescribed 500 mg every 8 hrs for 7 days after tooth extraction, but it irritates my stomach to the point I can't bring myself to take it again. There doesn't appear to be any infection either two days after procedure. I guess the doctor prescribed a high dose to be on the safe side, In the past I tolerated 250 mg capsules better, would it be a better choice to take lower dose more often (ie every 4-6 hours)?

Gary replied: "Ask your doctor"

Good Answerer replied: "Amoxicillin actually kills bacteria but if taken in too little dose or too short the it help bacteria to develop resistance for this antibiotic and antibiotics similar to them. As to changes in dosage you should definitely consult your doctor. But lowering the doses is way more sensible that quitting intake at all. Please don't stop taking it as such step may damage your heart."

Is it ok to take aspirin or tylenol while on antibiotics? I was just diagnosed with a very severe sinus infection (the infection was found behind the muscles of my eyes and in my blood) and I am on a high dose of amoxicillin. I have a little headache right now and I want to get rid of it so I can sleep better tonight. I seem to feel bad when I'm overly tired. Is it ok to take anything for it? Is it safe? I took the pill at 4:30 this afternoon with my dinner.

firemedicgm replied: "I would recommend Tylenol or Advil (Motrin). Yes, they are both safe to take with the antibiotic."

creativeusername7 replied: "Yeah but definitely don't take more then 2."

lilbunnywabbitt replied: "I was told yes by my pharmacist when I had a tooth infection and was prescribed the same thing (amoxicillin) but she recommended waiting 30 min to an hour before taking the aspirin to give your body a little recupe time."

jessica n replied: "It sure is. I'm on antibiotics right now and have to take Advil because of the massive headaches the antibiotics cause."

My son is on antibiotic...do you think the dose is really high? Alright I took my son to the Dr. He has an ear infection & URI. Normally when he gets sick the Dr. gives him Amoxicillin 250/5 and I give him 1 teaspoonful 3 times daily. Which would be 750mg. This Dr. gave him 400mg/5 taking 8 ml 2 times daily (dose per day equals 1280mg). To me that is alot. What is the normal dose for a 29 lb baby. I might just end up calling the Dr, but I don't want her to get upset with me questioning if she did something wrong and she really did it right.

smule1985 replied: "You can call you pharmacy if you dont want to bother your doctor. They will let you know!"

kiki replied: "Call your pharmacist and ask about it. That's what they're trained for, knowing these answers. You can speak to the doctor as well. Better to be safe. Since it's a liquid, the dosage may not be high, but I would want to know."

mamasun replied: "I know that dose is determined by the patients weight. If your concerned then call the pharmacy."

justmemimi replied: "when in doubt ask..... and also is this a full fledged doctor with experience or still in training?..... just ask for your kid's sake... there is no such a thing as a dumb question, most of all when your child is involved... it is quite high... the doctor never explained to you why?.... if yes... ask again- just say that you are really worried about how high the dosage is"

Ghst replied: "I think that you should seek a second opinion. It's best that you ask a paediatrician for his/her expert opinion on the matter as paediatricians specialise in providing medical attention to children."

J S replied: "You fail to mention if your son has prone to these infections or has reoccurring ear aches. The dosage prescribed to your son, although not common could and would be prescribed depending on three or four factors. Type of infection, frequency of infections, location of main infection. The larger dosage if probably due to the ear infection he has presently. The bottom line here is DO NOT STOP this medication on your son. Some of these infections have a very quick learning cycle and you could be setting him up for a long term infection that will not respond to drugs."

misko replied: "For children up to 12 weeks , 3 months, due to undeveloped kidney function, the max daily dosage is 30 mg/kg/day, the usual for moderate infections is 25 mg/kg/day if given 2 times a day or 20 mg/kg/day if divided in 3 daily portions. for children over 12 weeks the max. dosage is 45 mg/kg/day if given every 12 hours, or 40 mg/kg/day if given every 8 hours. You know your child's age and weight, so calculate it yourself. I hope the kid gets well soon."

greydoc6 replied: "About 8 - 9 years ago, the recommended dosage of amoxicillin was raised from 20 - 40 mg/kg per day to 80 - 100 mg/kg per day. This was because of increasing resistance of Strep and other bacteria to amoxicillin. As I calculate it, your pediatrician dosed your child a little less that 100 mg/kg per day. Sounds ok to me. But look, if you are concerned, call her back."

TTLC replied: "First off, your responsibility to your child comes first! Secondly,if a Dr. gets uptight at you for qustioning them... THEY got a problem, not you! Last, in todays medicine, if a person is on antibiotics more than once a yaer for same reason, a higher dose change in med., script extended from 7 to a 10 day, s common.Infections are learning /becoming immune to usual dosing and type... hence rendering antibiotics useless! Wha did the Pharm. say when you picked it up?They usualy will express a concern, or askyou if patent has had this before. Remember,... You are the mom and DO NOT feel ashamed to ask out of concern! The meds prescribed by Dr.can hurt,.. you can help avoid it! Yeah they generally 99.9% of times know what they are doing. But,.. they are human also! Which means they to can make mistakes. If by chance Dr. does get uptight at you for asking... you can report it online to your states medical board. email me if you need to"

Pharmacists, dr.s, nurses - anyone? I am going to need a root canal or a tooth pulled and I acn't get into y "emergency appt. " until next week. I went to my family dr. to give me something for the pain and he gave me a very high dose of amoxicillin and a pain killer called ultraset. How will this affect us TTC or will it?

monkeyhijinx replied: "Ultracet is aka Tramadol Hydrochloride. Amoxicillin is an antibiotic. Just tell them you're taking Tramadol - and try wording your questions better, I can't even tell what you're asking."

A Canadian replied: "Ultracet is a commonly prescribed pain medication that combines tramadol and acetaminophen. Speak with your doctor if you may be pregnant, or are trying to become pregnant, before using ultracet. Safe use during pregnancy has NOT been established. Amoxicillin is generally considered safe during pregnancy. Whenever you are trying to conceive (TTC) always handle meds as though you are already pregnant...because you might be! Good luck :)"

sabrinaelder replied: "You need goes to Dentist office as soon you can. if you have root canal. Dentist will take care your root canal as soon as possibe. It is very painful. It is hard to eating, while you had a root canal. They will not remove your tooth. They will fix your tooth. You will be perfect fine after your tooth releive the pain. Why you want goes the Dr. Those Doctor nothing do with your root canal."

My skin! My skin!!!! Help!? Hi, I have had a really bad inner ear infection (otitis media with effusion), I was put on semi high dose of amoxicillin for 7 days. This was about .. hmmmm ... three to four weeks ago. My skin broke out. Baaadly. Big massive zits. I have been taking pro-biotics during and after the antibiotic course, but my skin is still awful. Would my skin be bad due to the infection? Or due to the amoxicillin? What can I do to fix it! Help! I have a really good natural clay mask which I have been using regularly, that has helped a little.

kelly e replied: "Sometimes if we have an infection near our skin (teeth, ears) we can break out. The mask is great, but treat it with more then that. An acne face wash toner (witch hazel) I prefer the kind made by alba but there are plenty to look for at the drug store. Spot treat your acne with cream Drink a lot more water then you do. AND - vitamins a e and c and zinc. Also if possible get some sun. Not to tan, just small healthy doses of the vitamin d. Sleep.. I can suggest a few acne treatments but your face will tell what is best. Nutregena makes a good acne mask.. Aveeno, Clinique, Wexler system, Clean and Clear"

John replied: "Antibiotics often cause allergic reactions. But are you sure your skin isn't infected like when acne runs deep, in which case you'd need different antibiotics? The antibiotic will have lowered your defences to bacteria, yeasts and fungi too. Get some cold pressed Wheatgerm oil (capsules if you hate the taste) because that is very rich in Vitamin E, an excellent skin conditioner. Other foods also have good Vit. E. levels... look them up"

Trip to the ER, or can it wait for a doctor's apt in the am? My 2 year old daughter was diagnosed 12 days ago with an upper respiratory virus, we were sent home and told to "wait it out", if it doesnt get better in 7-10 days, bring her back. Well she ran a high fever (103-104 F) all ten days, and her cough was getting increasingly worse...so on the tenth day I took her in right away. They did an exam and opted to have her chest x-rayed...which showed early signs of pneumonia in her right lung (left lung was clear). Her pediatrician sent us home with a high dose of Amoxicillin (7ml 3 times a day) which she has been on now for 2.5 days. The dr told me she should no longer have a fever by Friday and to look for her catching her breathe or rapid breathing. She has continued to have a fever, although I am not having to give her IBU every 6 hours like I was, she is still running a temp of 101.8 as of 8 pm tonight. Her cough has gotten worse, she has started to wheeze and her breathing at times is quite rapid. The wheezing got bad tonight (I know what wheezing is and sounds like due to my husband and I both suffer from asthma) and I am concerned that she isnt getting enough oxygen. I know they say to check the fingers and toes for pink color, which she has kept, but as a mother of a toddler I feel I can never be too cautious. I have put her to bed with a humidifier and her wheezing has continued for the last 2.5 hours. Should I take her to the ER or wait for an apt with her pediatrician in the am?

Sarah replied: "IF SHE WERE MY DAUGHTER, WE WOULD HAD ALREADY WENT TO THE ER"

laci k replied: "i would already be at the ER...get there ASAP!!"

alleygirl replied: "I KNOW YOU HAVE PROBABLY ALWAYS LEFT BY NOW BUT FOR FURTHER REFERENCE WHEN YOU THINK SOMETHING ISNT RIGHT WITH YOUR CHILD YOU ARE RIGHT..........I HAVE BEEN THROUGH THIS MANY TIMES, MY SON COULD OF DIED TWICE IF I WASNT PERSISTENT AND REFUSED TO LEAVE WITHOUT TESTS, THEY LIKE TO PUSH YOU OFF! ALWAYS STAND YOUR GROUND TO THE DOCS NO MATTER WHAT, ITS BETTER TO BE SAFE THEN SORRY! GOOD LUCK AND IF YOU GET THIS LET ME KNOW HOW SHE IS!"

casdave2001 replied: "Don't wait, take her to the ER. They'll call your peditrician and do their tests and will do something for her. That's your baby, don't take chances. God bless and help her get through this.(and you too)"

Sarah f replied: "I would have taken her the first 2 days of having that high of a fever. Take her to the ER now!!!!"
